ScopeMessage from the Conference Chairs Welcome to the Twelfth Canadian Semiconductor Technology Conference (CSTC). While our success over the 22 years of our existence has generally paralleled the growth of the Canadian semiconductor industry as a whole, the interest of our sponsors, exhibitors and registrants continues to grow despite the short-term downturn in the communications and photonics sector. This enthusiasm reflects the intrinsic strength of the Canadian semiconductor research and development community. The conference is collocated in Ottawa with two workshops on rapidly developing fields. On Monday, the Workshop on Biotechnology and Biophotonics will be held at NRC's Ottawa facility on Sussex Drive. On Friday, the CMC Microsystems is again sponsoring the Workshop on MEMS at the Fairmont Château Laurier Hotel. In parallel with the conference, the American Vacuum Society will be offering a series of technical short courses of interest to the semiconductor community. Vitesse Canada Inc., a Canadian not-for-profit organization, also will be offering a series of introductory and specialized courses covering the important photonic technologies. In an effort to better connect the research and development communities with the industrial sector we will have a session on fabrication facilities and fabless synergies. The session will include a panel discussion involving some of the key fabrication and design houses in Canada.
The organizing committee will present the third CSTC Outstanding Achievement Award to someone who has made major contributions to semiconductor research and development in Canada. Our dedication to the development of young new researchers will again be highlighted by two student awards, one for the best oral presentation and the other for the best poster presentation by a student.
